Sacsayhuaman (sounds like sexywoman) is an astonishing place to visit. The stones are dated over 3000 years old. The sheer scale and volume of the stones amazes you. Your mind will wander into how on earth they brought these stones to the location and just how they chiseled the stones into such diverse shapes that interlock so securely.
Sacsayhuaman (it is pronounced saxaywoman), is a magnificent Inca built structure. It was built under the premise of it being ‘the head’ and Cusco was the body of the Puma. Inca Pachacuti, the man who founded the Inca empire was said to have commissioned this giant structure.
The blocks of stone are ginormous; some measuring up to 8.5 meters high and weighing around 300 tonnes. They are fitted together, as all Inca construction, with no mortar and shaped into locking perfection. According to legend, many man (around 3000) lost their lives when one giant stone broke free and tumbled upon them.
It was at Sacsayhuaman that one of the final battles in the defeat of the Inca Empire by the Spanish was lost.
